Chapter 14
This is what I think the fun of being an English teacher would come in. How to find the right books that fit the class personality and the content. When Beers brings up the point of choosing books strategically according to the length of the book, personally I believe that it is how the book is presented that decided whether students are going to read. But I do like the theory of choosing books that that student can relate to their characters and who may be facing similar choices. This could bring up great discussion in the classroom. When dealing with non-fiction, teachers should try to collaborate it with another subject or lecture to tie everything together for the big picture.

I also think it's important for students to be able to relate to the books they read, because then they will be able to be involved in the discussions and bring up their own experiences and link it with the text. If we give them something they've never experienced, they aren't going to have much to say.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is where the fun comes in. I am excited to read TONS of books looking for ones to use in class. Even if I don't use them in class, I think it's a way for TEACHERS to learn and grow as well. When teachers do find books that are usable in class it is like having your cake and eating it too.
ReplyDeleteI agree that students need to relate to the books they are reading. Students will read more if we choose books that reflect what they are thinking and feeling. Tehre are many classic books that I like but that does not mean my studentw ill like those same stories. I also work with adult learners. I often recommen=d books for my adults. Sometimes they like my suggestions, and other times they look at me like I am from another planet. I forget to reflect upon thier background and culture in my excitement that they want more to read. I always catch more interest if i sit with them and research books together. Typically it leads us to books I would never find myself reading of my own accard but they love. And in the end that is what becomes important did I just help an emergining reader become a confident book finder and eventual reaading lover. MPNicolino NHS teacher
ReplyDeleteGood points... The process of helping students find books can be difficult but once you "hook" a student it is very rewarding.
